چکیده

An important advantage of genetic algorithms (GAs) are their ease of use, their wide applicability, and their good performance for a wide range of different problems. GAs are able to find good solutions for many problems even if the problem is complicated and its properties are not well known. In contrast, classical optimization approaches like linear programming or mixed integer linear programs (MILP) can only be applied to restricted types of problems as non-linearities of a problem that occur in many realworld applications can not appropriately modeled. This paper illustrates for an entertaining student “sports” game that GAs can easily be adapted to a problem where only limited knowledge about its properties and complexity are available and are able to solve the problem easily. Modeling the problem as a MILP and trying to solve it by using a standard MILP solver reveals that it is not solvable within reasonable time whereas GAs can solve it in a few seconds. The game studied is known to students as the so-called “beer-run”. There are different teams that have to walk a certain distance and to carry a case of beer. When reaching the goal all beer must have been consumed by the group and the winner of the game is the fastest team. The goal of optimization algorithms is to determine a strategy that minimizes the time necessary to reach the goal. This problem was chosen as it is not well studied and allows to demonstrate the advantages of using metaheuristics like GAs in comparison to standard optimization methods like MILP solvers for problems of unknown structure and complexity.

Solving a generalized aggregate production planning problem by genetic algorithms

This paper presents a genetic algorithm (GA) for solving a generalized model of single-item resource-constrained aggregate production planning (APP) with linear cost functions. APP belongs to a class of pro-duction planning problems in which there is a single production variable representing the total production of all products. We linearize a linear mixed-integer model of APP subject to hiring...

Two optimal algorithms for finding bi-directional shortest path design problem in a block layout

In this paper, Shortest Path Design Problem (SPDP) in which the path is incident to all cells is considered. The bi-directional path is one of the known types of configuration of networks for Automated Guided Vehi-cles (AGV).To solve this problem, two algorithms are developed. For each algorithm an Integer Linear Pro-gramming (ILP) is determined. The objective functions of both algorithms are t...

Well-dispersed subsets of non-dominated solutions for MOMILP ‎problem

This paper uses the weighted L$_1-$norm to propose an algorithm for finding a well-dispersed subset of non-dominated solutions of multiple objective mixed integer linear programming problem. When all variables are integer it finds the whole set of efficient solutions. In each iteration of the proposed method only a mixed integer linear programming problem is solved and its optimal solutions gen...

MILP Formulation and Genetic Algorithm for Non-permutation Flow Shop Scheduling Problem with Availability Constraints

In this paper, we consider a flow shop scheduling problem with availability constraints (FSSPAC) for the objective of minimizing the makespan. In such a problem, machines are not continuously available for processing jobs due to preventive maintenance activities. We proposed a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) model for this problem which can generate non-permutation schedules. Furthermor...

Modeling and scheduling no-idle hybrid flow shop problems

Although several papers have studied no-idle scheduling problems, they all focus on flow shops, assuming one processor at each working stage. But, companies commonly extend to hybrid flow shops by duplicating machines in parallel in stages. This paper considers the problem of scheduling no-idle hybrid flow shops. A mixed integer linear programming model is first developed to mathematically form...
